Trainer Rob
Heathcote gained some consolation for the defeats of stable stars Buffering and
Solzhenitsyn in Melbourne when his talented youngster Greytfilly scored a
decisive victory at Doomben on Saturday.
Buffering
produced an uncharacteristic performance to finish sixth to Sea Siren in the G1
Manikato Stakes at Moonee Valley on Friday night while Solzhenitsyn was an unlucky
third to Silent Achiever in the G2 Schweppes Crystal Mile (1600m) on Cox Plate
day at Moonee Valley.
However, Greytfilly
kept the stable flag flying at Doomben with a commanding 2-3/4 lengths win over
Octane Flyer in the Mastec Handicap
(1110m).
Architect
was a further three-quarters-of-a-length away third.
Greytfilly,
a $30,000 purchase at the Magic Millions yearling sales, produced an eye-catching
performance to finish third for jockey Paul Hammersley on debut at Doomben two
weeks ago.
Jockey Ryan
Wiggins, who landed a winning double on the Heathcote-trained Heza Jetsetter
and Strike The Tiger at Eagle Farm on Wednesday, conceded he had reservations
about Greytfilly's chances.
"I've
ridden her in a couple of jumpouts and I
was a bit sceptical about her today," Wiggins said.
"But what
she did today really surprised me. I didn't think she was capable of doing that.
"She's
definitely got what it takes to be competitive in the Magic Millions and there's
plenty of improvement still to come."
Wiggins settled
Greytfilly in midfield before angling the daughter of Ferocity off the fence
approaching the home turn.
"She
can be a handful but she does have a big motor. She put paid to them quickly
once I asked her for an effort," Wiggins said.
Trainer
Matt Dunn proved the star at Doomben with a winning double from Dee Bee Nine and
Rapid Leica Dane.
Dee Bee
Nine made it back-to-back wins when he easily accounted for the Tony Gollan-trained
Spot The Rock in the Nugrow Handicap.
The son of
Red Ransom landed his sixth win of his 22-start career and took his prizemoney
past $176,000 with a 1-3/4 length victory.
Dee Bee
Nine was originally bought by Gai Waterhouse for $450,000 at the Magic Millions
sales in 2008 before being transferred to Rosehill trainer Gerald Ryan and eventually
to Dunn.
Rapid Leica
Dane also was formerly trained by Ryan before entering Dunn's stables last year.
The son of
Rapid Man, who has won two of his three wins under Dunn's care, was knocked
down for only $5,000 at the monthly Magic Millions sales in July, 2009.
