Epsom
Handicap plans for Bold Glance are in serious doubt after the Toowoomba sprinter
suffered a leg injury at Doomben on Saturday.
Trainer Norm
Hilton will closely monitor Bold Glance in the next few days after the
seven-year-old was galloped on behind in the Bruce Thomas Lawyers Handicap
(1600m).
Bold Glance
was racing in a forward position when the gelding suddenly dropped back to
finish eighth, almost four lengths, behind winner Lucky Luna.
Hilton had
planned to send Bold Glance straight into the G1 Epsom Handicap (1600m) next start
had he been successful.
"I was
going to take him down and give him a barrier trial and go straight into the Epsom
next start," Hilton said.
"But
that's all up in the air now.
"He's
been galloped on above the fetlock on his right hind leg. He's clipped the
tendon but the vets seem to think we might be lucky.
"I'm
not sure when it happened but I think it was just after they straightened. I was a bit puzzled the way he travelled when
a horse moved up to his outside."
Up until
the incident, Hilton was pleased with the way Bold Glance was travelling.
"He
settled nicely and was rolling along well but then he just didn't put in,"
he said.
"The
vets have bandaged his leg and I'll get my own vet to watch him closely in the
next few days before we make a decision about Sydney.
"It's
not what we wanted. We really needed to win to have a crack at the Epsom."
Bold Glance
showed last year he was up to the best company in Sydney after finishing third
in the G1 Doncaster Handicap (1600m) at Randwick.
Lucky Luna's
win continued the eight-year-old's great affinity with Doomben.
The son of
Springsteen has now won five of his 14 starts at the track and took his career
earnings to $467,000.
Trainer Les
Kelly has done a magnificent job with Lucky Luna recording his fifth win since
taking over from Eric Ropiha after his last in the Listed Sunshine Coast Cup at
Caloundra in January 2010.
