The Goondiwindi Race Club has the Gunsynd Park ready for the next of the Border Cup circuits this weekend. The XXXX Gold Cup over 1375 is the feature event and the raceday is once again a part of the fabulous Gourmet in Gundy Weekend.
Moree staged their Cup meeting last Sunday which saw the return to form of ex Toowoomba galloper Poor Judge who proved far too strong for the field which included Inverell Cup winner Usain Prince.
The Cups circuit now moves to the Queensland side of the border where a number of Border Towns will conduct their Cup meetings including Goondiwindi, Talwood, Stanthorpe & Texas – all strong border town centers.
A strong field is expected for the XXXX Gold Cup this week as recent nominations have proved strong on the Gunsynd Park track. The recent frost have played a toll on the track but the winter Rye Grass planting has assisted enormously.
The club applied 25 mm of irrigation over the weekend so it is hoped the track will be in good order for Saturday’s event. No rain is predicted and the warmer weather has promised to return after a very severe cold snap.
Local galloper, Cheque for Freedom was announced horse of the year for the Downs Circuit at the Dalby function last week and will return to racing at his favorite track this Saturday.
A strong bookmakers ring has already nominated for the Cp meeting and along with the on course tote, will cater for all the needs of the punter.
An extensive list of sponsors has also joined the fray and will enjoy the spectacle of racing at its best in the west on Turf this Saturday” President Michael Watt said today as the final cell of irrigation went on the track.
Elders Insurances, Tait Toyota, The Goondiwindi Fish Restocking Group, Kindts Furniture & Floor coverings and Greg Gilbert Builders support XXXX as the major sponsor for this event.
Naturally, those looking for an excellent weekend in the country will be catered for with the additional events of the famous Gourmet Weekend.
Friday night will see the Gourmet Art Show and Sunday is the Fine Food Fair on the banks of the MacIntyre River.
Another spectacle for the town this weekend is the Goondiwindi Medical Muster which will see a number of potential Regional students flock to Goondiwindi for the Medical Muster Weekend.
It is a great insight into Rural Health and encourages young Medical students of all professions to look at regional centers like Goondiwindi as an alternative to city living.
“We certainly have the Livability covered and with an excellent team of health practitioners, why would one not want to live in Goondiwindi” Mayor Graeme Scheu explained today.
As well, the Goondiwindi Aero Club stage their annual fly in on the weekend and aviation enthusiasts come from all over to be apart of the weekend.
This weekend is an example of cooperation within the town of Goondiwindi with everyone getting on and doing their bit and the XXXX Gold Cup is a significant part of the success of this wonderful weekend” President Michael Watt explains.
Nominations closed on Tuesday with acceptances due out on Thursday.
