Following a meeting with the ATA on October 11, 2012, Racing Queensland Limited (RQL) has made a change to way in which trainee apprentices are to commence trials.
Until now, the apprentice trials book has been mailed to the trainer. Although the log book does contain a detailed explanation, it is more effectively explained and discussed in person.
Therefore trainers will be briefed in person by instructor Lennie Maund about participation in trials, completing the purple covered log book, attendance in the jockey room for race day mentoring, completion of the RQL pre-race riding course and other requirements to commence race riding.
If there are any issues with the requirements then alternative arrangements can be discussed.
For example, trainee apprentices with limited access to official barrier trials can as now include suitable jumpouts.
A formula for this has been devised to ensure sufficient opportunity for the trainee to develop their skills and to be assessed. Also RQL can assist with travel arrangements if necessary.
Where trainers are concerned about trainees riding in some trials in FULL race gear (not a mixture) then this training may be done by use of the simulator as an alternative.
RQL will continue to provide new apprentices with a full set of high quality racing gear (value $2500) at or about the 15 trial point (conditions apply).
